11) ¡¡¡Feliz 2017!!!

Gaborone (Capital de Botswana) - 1/Ene/2017 - 5114 Km.

(English below... As I'm able!!!)

11) Happy 2017!!!!

Gaborone (Botswana's capital) - 01/01/2017 - 5114 Km.

The year begins in Gaborone with a radiant blue sky. Mid summer!! Last night lucky stars took me to a private party. At 12 o'clock people hugged eachother and congratulated themselves, and some of them jumped into the swimming pool to celebrate it while others let off fireworks. When I got to where I'm staying, I watched on YouTube the New Year Bells from my home town at Tenerife and, as a very deep Spanish tradition, I ate my 12 grapes!! Different customs with the same intention. I hope this 2017 smiles at all of us!!

This time is rainy season in Botswana (Passport stamp free / At the border / Very easy / 30 days). The truth is that I appreciate this rainy season because the scenery is very beautiful and the temperature is pleasant.

Botswana is a country slightly bigger than Spain, where only two million people live - the same amount as in the Canary Islands-. So space here is not a problem!! Even in Gaborone, many people live in a house with garden. In the center there are a couple of tall buildings that seem more capricious than necessity. The distance between many villages is around 30 km in which you only see cows and countryside. On the main road some cars, but fortunately not many. In many villages there is no accommodation, but thanks to the kindness of this people it was not difficult to find a small spot to put my tent each time.

Most touristic places in Botswana are on the west of the country, around five hundred kilometres from here: Chobe National Park, Okavango Delta, Kalahari Desert ... To get to them would have meant weeks of travel. However, I was able to visit the Khama Rhino Sanctuary and see, among others, those huge animals that graze peacefully like cows.

People from Botswana live in a fairly developed country, with good infrastructure, education and health services. They were lucky enough to get the independent from British Empire in 1966 -just 50 years ago- being a very poor country and only one year later discover one of the largest diamond mines in the world  - British had to get very happy!! Today they extract around a quarter of the world's diamond production and, unlike in other countries, most of their natural wealth has been reinvested in the country's improvement.

(Every where)

(Gaborone)

Tomorrow I leave towards South Africa border that I hope to cross the following day. If half of what I have heard and read about South Africa is true, it is not the safest country to ride a bicycle. I cross my fingers!!
